How does Civil Unions in Italy work?

A Civil union rite celebrated in Italy.

In order to be civilly united, both parties must fill out an application to request the establishment of a civil union in front of the Municipal Registrar.

When submitting the application, it will be possible to make an appointment to prepare the record of the request to establish a civil union.

The registrar, before the parties or their designated person, will sign the record in which the date the parties intend to appear for the establishment of the union.

The civil union may be formed 15 days after the formation of the drafting of the report have been drawn up and within 180 days from that date.

A foreign citizen who intends to form a civil union in Italy must also submit a statement from the competent authority of the country of origin showing that there are no impediments to the civil union.

Important!

If the law of that state does not recognize a civil union between persons of the same sex or similar legal institution (e.g., marriage), it is necessary to submit a certificate or other act proving that you are of free status, or a substitute declaration, according to Presidential Decree No. 445 of December 28, 2000.

A civil union may be formed by two adult persons of the same sex, not bound by kinship, affinity, adoption, marriage, or another union.

What is needed
In the application, it is necessary to indicate the following:

If Italian citizen:
Completed application form and identification documents.


If non-Italian citizen:
Completed application form and identification documents
Declaration from the country of origin’s competent authority shows a no-impediments certificate (nulla osta) for the civil union.

Or:
Certificate or other document proving free status or a substitute declaration according to Presidential Decree No. 445 of December 28, 2000, if the home state’s law does not recognize civil unions.
Costs
There are no costs involved in the process excluding the fee of the interpreters if needed and the wedding planners.

Phases and deadlines
The civil union may be formed after 15 days from the preparation of the record of the formation of the civil union and within 180 days from that date.
Please note that notice of marriage are not required for Civil Union.
