An AIRE-registered Italian citizen marrying in Italy must complete mandatory marriage banns (pubblicazioni di matrimonio) through their local Italian consulate abroad before the wedding can be celebrated.
An Italian citizen living abroad must formally apply for marriage banns at the competent Italian Consulate where they are registered under AIRE. The consulate will publish the banns digitally on their online notice board for eight consecutive days to verify there are no legal impediments.
To complete this process, you must submit specific documentation:
- A valid Italian passport or identity card for the AIRE citizen.
- A certified extract of your birth certificate issued by your Italian municipality of registration.
- A valid passport, an apostilled and translated birth certificate, and a Certificate of No Impediment (Nulla Osta) if the future spouse is a foreign citizen.
- A religious declaration from the local parish priest if celebrating a Catholic or concordat wedding.
If your future spouse lives in Italy or is registered under a different consulate, the offices will coordinate to ensure the banns are posted in both jurisdictions. After the posting period plus three days for legal objections passes, the consulate issues a clearance certificate (Nulla Osta/Delega). This authorization is sent directly to the selected Italian town hall (Comune), and you must celebrate the wedding ceremony within 180 days of issuance.
