Unlike a regular Catholic ceremony held in an Italian church, a Vatican wedding is celebrated within the territory of the Vatican City State, under its own jurisdiction.
That means both the religious validity and the civil recognition of the marriage follow a unique process established under the Lateran Treaty.
Couples must obtain:
- a religious authorization from the Vatican authorities;
- and a civil transcription handled by the Italian civil registry, which ensures the marriage is legally recognized in Italy and in the couple’s home country after apostille and translation.

Documents and Legal Procedures

- Certificates of Baptism and Confirmation;
- Prenuptial investigation (processus matrimonialis) issued by the Parish of origin;
- The bishop’s nihil obstat (authorization confirming no impediments under Canon Law);
- A declaration of freedom to marry according to civil law and national regulations.
Once approved, the wedding is celebrated under Canon Law, presided by a priest authorized by the Vatican Curia.
2. The Civil Path
After the ceremony, the marriage act is officially transmitted to the Italian civil registry (Comune di Roma – Ufficio Stato Civile Vaticano) as provided by the Lateran Treaty.
This transcription ensures that your marriage has full civil validity in Italy, and can later be recognized in your home country through apostille and translation procedures.
